Palestinians in angry riots over Jewish settlements
    Philippine Times
    Tuesday 16th March, 2010

Palestinian protesters have fought with Israeli police in East Jerusalem over settlement building in the area.

Palestinians threw rocks and flaming tyres, while police retaliated with stun grenades during the rioting, which broke out in many areas.

The rioting was a follow-up to Israel's plan to build 1,600 new East Jerusalem homes.

The rioters were also angered by the rededication of a formerly destroyed synagogue in the Old City.

The Hurva synagogue is close to the al-Aqsa mosque, Islam's third holiest site.

Israeli police deployed 3,000 officers across the city to quell the rioting but the lingering row over the settlement announcement enraged those Palestinians on the streets.

Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu has stood by Israel's settlements policy, saying he will not curb Jewish building activity in Jerusalem.
