Cold wave kills 14

Kantipur Report

KATHMANDU, Jan 9 - At least 14 people have died due to cold wave in the Terai belt in the last four days, state-owned media Radio Nepal reported Monday.

Normal life has also been severely affected in various districts in the Terai region due to sharp mercury dip.

Four people shivered to death due to pneumonia as a result of the cold wave in Mahottari district, said reports.

In Gulariya, the district headquarters of Bardia, shivering cold claimed lives of five people. Most of the schools remained closed due to extreme cold spell in the district. Sources at the district hospital said that there has been a rise in pneumonia patients.

Reports from Dhanusha said three people, including an Indian died due to extreme cold spell in Dhanusha district on Saturday.

In Rautahat, two people died of severe cold in Gaur Municipality on Sunday evening.

Foggy weather and excessive cold has affected normal life in Bara, Banke, Kailali and Kanchanpur districts, added reports.

Though there has been some improvement in the weather, the freezing temperature will continue for a few more days, the Radio Nepal reported quoting weather forecasting department.  (dds)
