Genaral Hermogenes Esperon, the scandal-tainted head of the Philippine armed forces retired Monday, claiming success in the fight against communist insurgents and military rebels.
General Esperon, who is accused of conniving with President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo in rigging the 2004 presidential election, turned over his position to army chief Lieutenant General Alexander Yano.
He said that under his watch, he left the communist rebels in disarray and successfully quashed attempts by rebel soldiers to topple Arroyo, whom Filipinos voted the country's most corrupt leader over late dictator Ferdinand Marcos and former president Joseph Estrada.
The 56-year-old general also cited the killing of senior leaders of the Al Qaeda-linked Abu Sayyaf rebels, including its chieftain Khadafi Janjalani, as among his achievements as chief of staff.
Esperon was expected to get a position in the Arroyo government as a reward for his loyalty.

Surprise? Why should anyone be surprised if the general gets a hot position in this government. Corruption is the name of the game while the poor keep getting poorer, hungrier and more desparate while the elite keep robbing them to make themselves wealthier, just like the catholic church. |

| You get rid of one in the position and put another person, they will be doing the same thing. Politics in P.I. is a big mon ey making positions. It is our culture to be corrupt and you can not take that a way from the Pilipino habit. It is our culture to be crooks.I agr e ed with singkamas. WE should have under the American surpervision and learn how to govern our govertment before we a r e given the big independence. Gr e ed is our motive t o gov ern and take a dvantage of being the lead er of the country. |
